Cherelle Sappleton
Drawing inspiration from surrealist aesthetics, art history and popular culture, Cherelle Sappleton’s work combines collage, photo-montage and moving image to explore feminist agendas and critical questions of agency, representation and commodification. At the core of Sappleton’s practice is the black female body and its positioning in discourses of sexuality and gender politics.
Continuing her investigation of notions of self and other, scopophilia and desire, private and public, her latest work is exceptional in both its conceptual strength and visual appeal. Combining images of fragmented body parts with iconic imagery from art history and popular culture, bold patterns and cut-out fruit, her work commands attentive engagement for her audience by being both humorous and unsettling, inciting a sense of unease while subtly forcing us to reflect on our own voyeuristic desires.
